Light rail vs. streetcar

A Utah mayor converts from light rail to streetcar for his city.  The article doesn’t spell out what convinced him except for a trip to Europe.  Streetcars, to me, seem to cater more to leisure travelers than commuters/employees.  But streetcars do seem to be more popular for the average consumer.

  1. Does the American version of English have much of a difference?

In Australia we say tram versus light rail but the only time we’ve seen the difference spelt out was in Rockingham, Western Australia (google Rockingham light rail) were they insisted a single car (not articulated) running on street would be tram, off street and artic would be light rail.

In Melbourne they don’t care as much!
