Free fare cards pose problems

Here’s an interesting issue in the Phoenix area.  Essentially, the incentives given to employees to ride transit by getting cheaper passes from their employers, but the employers get billed based on how often the employees ride, and the employees aren’t remembering to tap their cards to record their rides.

Seems to me like the whole idea of working with employers to incent transit ridership is a good one, but the transit agency should probably consider a slightly more simple approach–a flat fee per pass or per employee or per company to distribute the passes, perhaps.  It goes back to my earnest desire to see us make all aspects of transit ridership as “fool proof” as possible to allow for the least amount of confusion and obstacles.
