Transit: Your choice for a down economy

This won’t surprise you that much, I hope, but transit saves you money.  When you compare insurance, fuel, and parking costs, to say NOTHING of repairs and maintenance costs associated with owning/driving a car, this study shows you could save more than $9,000 a year riding transit.  Obviously, that’s going to vary widely from city to city and depending on where you live in relation to transit, and I don’t know that it factors in “productivity” based on how long a ride might take on transit vs. in a private car, but I think the study is worth your attention.

  1. These comparisons are almost always bogus – unless you can COMPLETELY get rid of at least one car, you save $0.00 on insurance and $0.00 on depreciation; both of which actually cost most people more than gas.
